Passport requirement for Afghan drivers trade at Torkham border closed again

The Pak-Afghan border has once again been closed to trade over a passport requirement for Afghan drivers, Pakistani officials on Saturday denied imposing a visa requirement, saying they had informed their Afghan counterparts.
That truck drivers can cross the border only with a valid passport, however, the Afghan authorities closed the border instead of ensuring its implementation.
Abdul Jabbar Hikmat, an Afghan border affairs official, said that Pakistani authorities have closed the Torkham border to commercial truck drivers without visas.
A Pakistani customs official told AFP “Following our updated policy, Afghan authorities were informed last night that cargo drivers will only be allowed to go to our side if they have passports.” He said the regulation had been agreed upon in past meetings between Afghan and Pakistani officials on border rules.
